Quarantine dodger uses BED SHEETS in a brazen escape from the fourth floor of his Perth hotel room – after he was caught illegally flying in from Queensland

    The 39-year-old man had arrived on a flight into Western Australia from Brisbane about 4:15pm on Monday but had not completed a G2G pass. 

    The man was promptly transported to a hotel quarantine facility in Rivervale after his manual application did not meet the requirements for a travel exemption.

    Police have alleged the man used bed sheets from his hotel room to create a makeshift rope, before climbing out of a window on the fourth floor and escaping

    He was issued with a directive to leave WA in the next 48 hours and was ordered to temporarily quarantine overnight in a hotel in east Perth. 

    Police have alleged the man escaped the hotel around 12:45am on Tuesday, using the sheets from his bed to create a makeshift rope. 

    'He climbed out a window of the fourth floor room using a rope made of bed sheets and fled the area,' police said in a statement. 

    Officers found the alleged escapee a few hours later around 8:55am in Mount Lawley, a short 15 minute walk from Rivervale, and arrested him. 

    Police charged the man with failing to comply with a direction and providing false or misleading information.  

    He returned a negative test for Covid-19 and is expected to appear in Perth Magistrates Court later on Tuesday. 

    WA currently holds a hard border with Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria as the states scramble to control recent outbreaks of the Indian Delta variant. 

    NSW has recorded 78 new Covid-19 cases overnight - but 27 were out in the community while infectious.

    Of the 49 linked cases, 45 are household contacts and 4 are close contacts.

    Victoria's snap five-day lockdown has been extended for seven days as the state recorded 13 new cases on Tuesday, now due to end at midnight on July 27. 

    This is Victoria's fifth lockdown since the pandemic hit Australia's shores early last year and the third one so far in 2021. 

    In Queensland, health authorities on Tuesday recorded a mystery case of Covid-19, a fully-vaccinated woman who had no known links to other clusters. 

    South Australia has been plunged into lockdown from 6pm tonight after recording a further two new cases of Covid overnight, bringing the total for the state to five.
