Trump Jr. says his father has changed since shooting and "toned down" his RNC speech

Donald Trump Jr. speaks at an event hosted by Axios on Tuesday, July 16.

Donald Trump. Jr said his father, former President Donald Trump, is a changed man after the assassination attempt and that his new speech for the Republican National Convention will be “toned down.”

“I think actually, yes,” Trump Jr. said at an event Tuesday hosted by Axios on the sidelines of the RNC, when asked if his father is a “changed man.”

Trump Jr. said he believes this new version of his father will last. But when asked if he expects a permanent change in the former president’s tone, Trump Jr. said, “He’s going to be tough when he has to be” and isn’t “going to just take an attack.”

He added later, “He’s never going to stop being Trump when attacked. That’s, that’s what makes him an effective leader because he doesn’t cower under fire, quite literally. He’s defiant under that. So he’s never going to change that. But I think, you know, in, in the course of daily action, you can still change. There’s a time and a place for all of those things and I think he’ll be able to do both.”

Trump Jr. said he spent hours with his father on Friday going through his speech planned for the RNC and that his remarks were originally “hot,” but now the speech is “very different” and “toned down.”

“I think we’re trying to, you know, certainly deescalate some of that rhetoric,” he said.
