‘The Coming Darkness’: ‘The Chosen’ Drops Emotional Season 4 Trailer

“The Chosen” dropped an emotional trailer for Season 4 on Monday about “the coming darkness” Jesus and his followers will be facing.

In the two-minute-plus trailer, fans of the show — which explores the life of Jesus through those who were closest to him — see a worried Jesus (played by Jonathan Roumie) and his followers upset. A voiceover throughout the clip speaks about the meaning of “darkness.”

There are various images in the trailer that will be familiar to those of faith, specifically a shot of Jesus and his followers standing in front of the tomb that would end up being where he was buried and eventually resurrected.

“Clashing kingdoms. Rival rulers. The enemies of Jesus are closing in while His followers are struggling to keep up, leaving him to carry the burden alone,” a description about the upcoming season reads, per a press release.

“Threatened by the reality of Jesus’ growing influence, religious leaders do the unthinkable—ally with their Roman oppressors,” it adds. “As the seeds of betrayal are planted and opposition to Jesus’ message turns violent, He’s left with no alternative but demand his followers RISE UP.”

Speaking about the new season, coming first exclusively to the big screen, creator and director Dallas Jenkins said, “Last year we dipped our toes in the water by releasing a few episodes in theaters. The response was so strong, and Season Four is so big, that we knew we and Fathom had to give viewers the theatrical experience for all eight episodes.”

Starting in 2024 — following the release of three episodes of season three on the big screen in 2023 — the first three episodes of Season 4 will hit theaters starting February 1, 2024, and run for two weeks. It will be followed by a release on February 15 of the next three episodes, 4-6. The conclusion will hit the big screen on February 29, when fans can catch the last two episodes, 7-8.
