US President Joe Biden began his news conference in Hanoi, Vietnam, Sunday by addressing the earthquake in Morocco that has killed more than 2,000 people.

“I want to express my sadness by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Morocco,” Biden said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people in Morocco.”

The president said his administration — including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was in the room where Biden was speaking — is working with Moroccan officials to "ensure American citizens in Morocco are safe."

The US is "standing ready providing the necessary assistance to Morocco," Biden added.

Biden is in Vietnam for a diplomatic visit following his attendance at the G20
