She reportedly spoke perfect English but authorities have not yet been able to confirm her nationality.

The woman was eventually rescued by a team of 14 people who had to use 4x4s and walk two miles over the rocks to get to her.

Officials said she had no passport, papers or phone and could barely drink water as she was so weak.

She is reportedly in hospital receiving medical treatment.

She was described as being 5ft 4in with shoulder-length hair, and survived 'several nights' in an area where bears are known to prowl, according to experts.

A resident who lives nearby told news site 24Sata: 'It’s weird that she was looking in the area at all. It is an extremely inaccessible part of the bay with terribly sharp rocks — literally razors that cut the rubber on your shoes.

'A woman that age certainly could not swim that distance, it needs exceptional strength.'

The isle of Krk covers 157 square miles and is the largest island in the Adriatic sea.

It is home to 17,000 people and connected to the mainland by bridge.

The island is located about 30km from the city of Rijeka, and is also popular with tourists.
