Celtic footballer Ciaran Dickson, 19, is arrested after 18-year-old is killed in 'hit-and-run' in Glasgow

A footballer has been arrested after a teenager was killed in an alleged hit-and-run on Saturday morning.

Celtic starlet Ciaran Dickson, 19, was taken into custody after 18-year-old Aidan Pilkington was hit by a car on Crow Road, Glasgow, in the early hours of the morning.

Aidan was found seriously injured on the side of the road and rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital at 12.20am but could not be saved.

Dickson, who plays for the Celtic B team, was arrested on Sunday before being released pending an investigation and a car was traced yesterday following a police appeal.

The midfielder, from Erskine in Renfrewshire, made his debut for Rangers FC last November and was handed a three-year deal by the club in January.

But the Scotland Under-19 international was released from Rangers in August before being swiftly signed to Celtic FC on August 31.

Meanwhile, Aidan's devastated family paid tribute to the teenager - who was planning to move to Dundee for university next week.

They said: 'Aidan was treasured by his family, and well loved and respected by his friends and community.

'He created a bright future for himself and was really looking forward to these opportunities and challenges. It is very cruel that he has been robbed of his life in this way.'The family would like to thank friends, in particular Aidan's friends, and the wider community, for their love, support, and kindness.'

In June the teenager finished Sixth Form at Hyndland Secondary School, with the headteacher Louise Edgerton describing him as a 'kind' and 'loyal' friend who would be missed.

She added: 'Aidan was a very special young man in so many ways, thoughtful, ambitious, wanting to live a good and meaningful life.

'His family was well known to us as he was the youngest of three, both brothers attended Hyndland before him.

'Anyone who had the pleasure to teach Aidan also remember him fondly for his inquisitive mind and his sense of justice.'

A note on the page read: 'After hearing of the tragic news that one of our valued team members and friend has sadly passed away following a tragic road incident, we wanted to do as much as we can to support his family and everyone who cared about him.

'To do this we are raising money to help support his family with any costs that may come at this tragic time. If anyone could donate anything they can no matter how big or small to show your support to his family and loved ones.'

Sergeant Scott Sutherland, from the Road Policing Unit, said: 'A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident.

'He's been released pending further investigation.

'We would like to thank everyone who has got in touch with us so far regarding the appeal, and urge anyone who has information, but has yet to contact us.'
