Amazon is the most expensive place to buy DIY tools compared to Britain's biggest hardware stores, Which? reveals

    Homebase and Screwfix came second and third, at £163 and £165, with Toolstation and Wickes making up the rest of the list.

    Consumer champion Which? also found huge price differences between individual items in the basket, which included a handsaw, a toolbox, and masking tape. The prices were tracked over the year to May 2021 at all six chains.

    But a survey of 6,000 shoppers, also by Which?, found that Amazon received five stars for value for money. 

    Respondents were also asked to rate their experiences on factors including product range and quality, and customer service.

    Screwfix and Toolstation came top, each earning customer scores of 82 per cent and five-star ratings across all categories.

    Amazon is the most expensive shop for DIY tools compared with leading hardware stores, Which? has found. A basket of 18 popular tools cost £206 from the online retailer – and just £151 at B&Q 

    Amazon was third with a customer score of 77 per cent. Nine in ten said they were pleased with its product selection, and nearly everyone was satisfied with its delivery service. 

    Harry Rose, Which? magazine editor, said: ‘Our analysis shows the best places to buy DIY items combine great customer service with good value for money, and that shopping around for the best prices could make a startling difference to your bill.’

    A spokesman for Amazon said: ‘Sellers set their own product prices in our store and we have policies to help ensure sellers are pricing their products competitively.’
