D'oh de toilette! Couple ram-raid Boots to steal £15,000 of perfume... but are caught after thief drops purse at scene

    Shocking CCTV shows Michael Denyer and Christina Colton purposefully smash their Ford Fiesta into the shop window. 

    The balaclava-clad couple then went about breaking into cabinets to steal perfume and aftershave worth £15,221 before fleeing the scene.

    The ram raid caused extensive damage to the Bristol store which totalled more than £13,400 and the store had to be temporarily closed.

    The incident happened at around 3.25am on the morning of June 23, 2019, at the Boots store in Trowbridge, Wilts. 

    Despite wearing masks to hide their identities, the couple were tracked down after detectives recovered Colton's purse at the scene which contained her ID.After finding the purse, detectives still had to prove Colton was the offender and that the purse had not merely been left during trading hours.

    Denyer was arrested the following evening after officers traced the same Ford Fiesta and located it in Bristol.

    Evidence recovered from his phone and CCTV from the day of the incident, which showed him in store conducting reconnaissance ahead of the burglary, proved the extent of his planning beforehand.

    Crime scene investigators also obtained forensic evidence which proved he was one of the offenders.

    Denyer, 33, of Bristol, and Colton, 44, of Bristol, were sentenced yesterday at Swindon Crown Court.

    They had both previously pleaded guilty to burglary and criminal damage.

    Denyer was jailed for three years. Colton was jailed for two years and nine months, which included sentencing for both this incident and twice failing to surrender to custody. 

    Det Con James Gatherum, from Central CID, said: 'Colton has repeatedly tried to evade justice for this crime and there have been warrants out for her arrest since she previously failed to appear for court hearings.

    'Denyer has remained in prison for an unrelated offence, since being charged for this burglary.

    'Today's sentencing marks the end of a very long journey since the incident happened, but after a great deal of evidence gathering and delays caused by Colton, I am happy to see both defendants receive lengthy prison sentences.'
