Road reassignment: Confused locals living on Alexander Road are puzzled to discover it's had a sex change after new signs label it ALEXANDRA Road

Residents living on Alexander Road were left scratching their heads after the street was inexplicably re-labelled Alexandra Road.

Residents in Beccles, Suffolk, said it is not clear when the mysterious 'gender swap' happened.

East Suffolk Council acknowledged the mix-up and confirmed the sign would be changed back.

Some residents said they only noticed the mistake three days ago but others said they saw the name-change signs a week ago.

One woman had to phone her husband and ask what street they lived on because she was left confused.

She said: 'I was driving back home and pulled up on to the side of the road. 'I looked to my right and it said Alexander Road and then I looked to my left and it said Alexandra Road.

'I suddenly thought, "hang on, where do I live?"

'I rang up my husband in shock and asked what street do we live on and he said Alexandra Road.

'I talked to another resident about this and they said they didn't care the sign had been changed.

'But it is quite serious because I own property on this street and have bills to pay.

'Some delivery and takeaway drivers have pulled up and been left confused as well so I hope something is done about this.'

Her neighbour Peticia Larter added: 'I didn't notice it until about three days ago and it did make me laugh.

'We haven't had problems with deliveries yet but my friend also spotted it and got a photo beside the sign with her daughter.'

A spokeswoman for East Suffolk Council confirmed the sign would be changed back.

She said: 'We are aware that a street sign has been installed which contains a spelling error and arrangements are already in place for the incorrect sign to be replaced as soon as possible.'
