- First place was awarded to a Canadian photographer who captured a father cradling his daughters Although the pandemic has affected the pregnancy and birthing experiences for many parents around the world, the raw emotions of welcoming a new baby remains the same - as these photographs prove.
The International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (IABP) has celebrated the best photographs capturing the breathtakingly intimate moments of labor and the first minutes of life in its annual competition.
Winners were selected across five categories - labor, delivery, postpartum, birth details and fresh 48 - by a panel of industry experts. Among the breathtaking winning photographs is an image of a father cradling his newborn daughters and surrounded by his three older girls, as well as a snap of a mother holding her newborn baby moments after giving birth in a pool of water.
Liz Cook who is director of IABP, acknowledged that this year's entries had increased challenges, saying: 'Despite birth photographers worldwide losing a majority of their work and income in 2020 due to the global pandemic, I am thrilled to be able to feature the talent of our members in our annual image competition.
'We are incredibly proud of the entrants of this year's competition because in spite of all we endured in our community in recent months, this contest represents the resistance birth photographers have to overcome unforeseen challenges. We are proud to present to you a breathtaking body of work that shares life's mos powerful moments from 2020.'

Danny Merz of danny merz | geburtsreportage from Germany, was awarded Best In Delivery by members for his breathtaking photograph titled 'Grace'
Among the honourable mentions is a photograph by Dana Jacobs from the United States, titled 'Of All Our Travels, This Journey Will Be Our Greatest'
Kandyce Wagar from Canada, snapped the intimate moment a mother embraced her newborn for a photograph titled, 'This Moment 2020'. It was another honorable mention
First place went to Ashley Marston of Ashley Marston Birth Photography, from Canada, for a photograph of a father with his daughters, titled 'Daddy's Girls'
Members were impressed with Carey Lippert from the United States, after submitting her photo 'Nursing A Newborn' for the Best In Fresh 48 category
Laura Brink of Rewild Her, from Australia, titled a man helping his partner give birth 'Primal Shapes of Birth', winning Best in Labor by members
Lisa Phillips from the United States, received recognition for capturing a mother giving birth in a pool of water
Rianna Cross who lives in Australia, captured the intimacy of birth in a snap titled 'Reborn'
Hanna Hill from the United States, had her photograph 'My Body, My Birth', of a mother and her newborn sitting on a bed awarded Best in Postpartum by judges
