A spokesperson for the force said that the girl did not suffer any serious injures but it was only 'through good fortune' that no one else was injured.

Detective Sergeant Jo Haffenden said: 'I would like to reassure the community in Litherland that we will not tolerate such incidents of anti-social behaviour like we saw on Wednesday evening which put community safety at risk.

'It is only through good fortune that nobody during the incident on Wednesday was seriously injured and I hope all those involved will think very carefully about their actions.

'We are in the middle of a global pandemic and so it is against the law for groups to be gathering in this way.'I'd encourage all parents and guardians of young people locally to know where they are, who they are with, what they are doing and making sure they are abiding by Covid rules.

'If we all pull together, we will be able to return to normality a lot sooner.

'I'd strongly encourage members of the public to report incidents of anti-social behaviour to the police as when we receive information we will take action.'

The fight broke out shortly after 6.30pm, with police being called minutes later to reports of a 'disturbance'.

One witness to the fight reported seeing a young girl suffering head injuries, after she was allegedly 'stamped on'.

It is understood this witness attempted to break up the violence and physically tried to separate those fighting.

A shocking video from the scene showed a large crowd of young people fighting each other, while screams could be heard.

Shouts of 'F*** off' are also heard on the footage, although it is not clear who is shouting.

Police said no one other than the 13-year-old girl suffered any injuries and officers are continuing to investigate the incident.

It is not clear at this stage what started the altercation or why a large group were meeting up while lockdown restrictions still apply.

It comes after Merseyside Police arrested a 12-year-old boy after a teenager was stabbed in a park in Wirral.

The 16-year-old was taken to hospital after being attacked in the arm, while the youngster was taken to a police station for questioning.
