When work was finished, the motor was purchased by the London Motor Museum in Hillingdon where they kept it on display to members of the public.

However, after having been forced to close their doors for good after a row with their local council, the museum is now selling the custom Batmobile.

Auctioneers Bonhams are selling the motor on March 20 and have described the custom vehicle as 'ridiculously exciting'.

The motor is powered by an original 5.7L V8 engine and comes with both number plates and indicators, suggesting the buyer would be able to take their new vehicle onto the road.

However, with a staggering total length of 23ft, whoever buys the custom car will struggle to find an appropriate parking space.

Harry Fox-Edwards, an expert with Bonhams, said: 'I am ridiculously excited about this lot, it really is amazing.

'Every kid wants to own an actual Batmobile and that's exactly what this is.

'It was made using an old Ford Mustang by a private firm here in the UK.

'Footage from the time shows it being fired up on a rolling road so everything suggests that it will work just fine.

'It also has number plates and a number of other features that would suggest to me that you would be allowed to drive it on the road.

'It is absolutely vast and took us four hours just getting it off the lorry.

'I have never seen anything quite like it and it is so exciting to see how it gets on.'

    The 'Keaton Mobile'

Tim Burton's Batmobile, driven by Michael Keaton in two Batman movies is one of the most popular versions of Batman trusty motor.

The Batmobile itself sat on a Chevrolet chassis and even features functional gadgets.

However, the exhaust afterburner could only run for around 15 seconds.

The original Keaton Batmobile was voice-controlled with an interior that features contoured seats, aircraft instrumentation and a weapon system that includes two Browning submachine guns.

The design of the car was so important that Michael Keaton's Batsuit had to be modified so that he could fit into the car, rather than modifying the car itself.
