  • Group of rescuers had gathered to try and get the creature down on December 7 This is the bizarre moment a raccoon drops off a high ledge in Manhattan and is caught by people holding a tarpaulin on the sidewalk below.

The chunky animal had apparently scaled a building around 100 Hudson Street in Tribeca, New York, on December 7.

Footage shows the raccoon falling from the ledge 20 feet up the building and being caught, as one onlooker screams.

An NYPD officer can be seen next to the rescuers as they catch the animal - but the masked bandit makes a run for it and hides under a nearby coffee cart. One rescuer had climbed up and wedged themselves between two columns, trying to get the animal into a bin.

Despite the rescuers' efforts to provide a soft landing, the raccoon hits the pavement as it landed in the tarpaulin.

However, one of the crowd of people who had gathered to watch the rescue said the raccoon seemed unhurt.

It is unclear where the plucky animal ended up.

The footage shows the raccoon run under a vehicle and the filmer claimed  it later hid in 'someone's car engine'.
