Sweeping transformation! Six people spend 50 hours scrubbing layers of mould and piles of rubbish from filthy Cumbria semi where widower in his 80s had not cleaned for years after his wife died

  • Every surface of the two-bedroom semi-detached property in Dalton, Cumbria was covered in dirt and mould
  • A team of six cleaners in protective suits worked for a total of 50 hours to leave the house squeaky clean

These shocking pictures reveal a remarkable transformation after six people spent 50 hours scrubbing a filthy house that had not been cleaned for years.

The two-bedroom property was covered in dirt and mould since the elderly homeowner, a widower in his eighties, had given up housework after his wife died.

A team of six cleaners in masks and protective suits worked tirelessly scrubbing layers of grime and shifting piles of rubbish from the semi-detached house in Dalton, Cumbria.

Cleaning company boss Emma-lea Dalton said the bathroom needed plumbing work but because of the conditions no one had been in there

And as the before photos show the house covered in thick layers of dirt and mould, the astonishing after images show every surface  sparkly clean.

The work was carried out Emma-lea Dalton and her crew of cleaners at My Kind of Clean.

They donned protective overalls and masks before entering the house and began by clearing out all the rubbish - which filled two large skips.

The next stage of the process, Emma-lea said, was to set about scrubbing the grime and, after some hours, returning the property to its former glory.

The 29-year-old added: 'As a cleaning company we see a variety of different situations but this is definitely at the extreme end.

'It's definitely one of the worst situations I have encountered.

'My cleaners are all very professional, they rolled their sleeves up and got the job done.'

My Kind of Clean carried out a visit to the house before going back to clean it, so they could arrive with a 'meticulous' plan, Emma-lea said.

She added: 'The owner had hoarded lots of things over the years, most of which was rubbish we could throw away.

'The kitchen was in disrepair and the bathroom needed plumbing work but because of the conditions no one had been in there.

'I think the place had been degenerating for some years after the death of the owner's wife.

'It's very sad that it got to this point but luckily the man's friends reached out to us and asked for help, otherwise he would still be living in conditions like that.'

One of the man's friends was said to be 'speechless' when they saw the transformation and the homeowner, who wants to remain anonymous, was also 'very happy', Emma-lea said.

She added that her crew were quite emotional at the end of the clean up, which was around eight hours work for six people.

Emma-lea said: 'It's very fulfilling to see the difference we made, not only to a house but also someone's life.

'Jobs like this one are about more than just cleaning.

'Hopefully others see that this kind of situation is nothing to be embarrassed about and there are ways out, they just need to ask.'
