Mugshot shows shrapnel wounds on face of 'involuntarily celibate man, 23, who accidentally amputated his own hand making a bomb to blow up hot cheerleaders' - but who told FBI he hurt himself in a lawn mowing accident

  • Cole Carini arrived at a hospital on Tuesday with a missing hand, missing fingers on his other hand, and shrapnel wounds on his neck
  • Carini was subsequently interviewed by police who obtained a warrant to search his  home after learning he previously had been convicted on explosives charges
  • Investigators  discovered Triacetone Triperoxide - a substance used in the creation of improvised explosive devices
  • They also found  PVC pipes, pieces of loose wires, empty chemical containers and a hot plate cooking surface in a shed belonging to Carini's grandmother
  •  The FBI believes Carini may have been making an explosive to blow up 'hot cheerleaders' - based on a letter they also discovered at his home
The FBI believes a Virginia man accidentally amputated his own hand while making an explosive device that may have been designed with the aim to kill 'hot cheerleaders'.
Cole Carini, 23, of Richlands, arrived at the Clinch Valley Medical Center on June 2 with a missing hand and shrapnel wounds on his neck and throat. Several fingers on his other hand were also missing. He claimed the injuries were the result of a lawn mowing accident.
However, a police officer who arrived at medical facility to interview Carini soon turned suspicious after learning the young man had previously been convicted on explosives charges.

Officers soon obtained a warrant to search Carini's home, and called in the FBI who discovered drops of blood that lead from a minivan outside the residence to a bedroom on the second floor of the property.
According to an arrest affidavit, investigators found 'a piece of human skin' and 'a skin colored chunk believed to be flesh' inside that bedroom.
The FBI also discovered a plastic bottle containing Triacetone Triperoxide - a substance used in the creation of improvised explosive devices. Substantial blood spatter was also observed on the walls of the room.
Investigators then decided to search a shed on a neighboring property belonging to Carini's grandmother. Inside officers located PVC pipes, pieces of loose wires, empty chemical containers and a hot plate cooking surface.
On the floor of the shed was a 'crumpled letter', part of which read: 'He casually walked through the shopping mall, his jacket concealed deadly objects. He was doing it and was assured it must be done. Even if he died this statement was worth it! He had... of tension that would come and go as he approached the stage of hot cheerleaders.'

Investigators also uncovered a letter that may have been written by Carini in which he describes someone 'concealing deadly objects in their jacket' as they approach 'hot cheerleaders'

The letter continued: 'A dead seriousness sank in as he realized he was truly passing the point of no return! He decided I will not back down I will not be afraid of the consequences no matter what I will be heroic I will make a statement like Elliott Rodgers did he thought to himself.'
Elliot Roger was a mass shooter, who killed six people and injured 14 others during a rampage in Santa Barbara in 2014. In a manifesto penned before his death he described himself as a 'kissless virgin', who wanted to take his anger out on women.

Roger was dubbed an 'incel [or involuntarily celibate] killer'. According to the Daily Beast, incel-related violence has been linked to at least 53 deaths in recent years. It is unclear whether Carini is involuntarily celibate.
When questioned by the FBI about his injuries, Carini repeatedly told them they were the product of a lawn mower accident.
However, investigators noticed the grass in his yard was around six inches high.
Based on the evidence, Carini was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of lying to federal agents.
He is due to appear in court in the coming days.
