Former cult members have revealed the moment they realized they needed to leave the religious communities they had naively joined.
In a Reddit thread that was started on Monday, people were asked to share what finally led them to step away from the cults they had become involved in, with some explaining that they were expected to give all their money and time to the organizations.
'I never joined, but I attended a church for a while that turned out to be a cult,' one person wrote. 'The moment that really made it clear: I told someone I wouldn't be there that coming Sunday because I had work. She asked "Do you really need that job?"'

The Reddit user said a woman who was baptized there ended up 'running home crying' because the other members had overwhelmed her with everything she needed to do.
'I don't remember this church's name anymore. It was something very common and innocuous sounding,' the person added. 'They weren't a full-blown cult, as far as I know, because I don't think they cut people off from the rest of the world. But they were definitely a small-fry cult.'
One woman shared that she backed out of a cult after its leader invited her on a date with three other women.
'I thought they were just friends he had met there at the venue, but no. They were also his "girlfriends." I was expected to join his harem,' she explained.
'I then asked one of the three women when going to the restroom together if they all sleep with him at the same time. She said yes and that it is very boring.'
The woman told her that after he finishes, he 'goes into a massive refractory period,' and they have to wait a full hour until he has sex with the next girl, meaning sexual activity lasts for about four hours.

'I thought, hell no and made an excuse that my father had found out about the cult and threatened to kill me if I join it because he can't handle not being the one controlling me,' she recalled. 'Fortunately they did not come after me.'
Many people shared that they had joined churches and other religious groups without realizing those particular sects were actually cults.
'I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. I bought into everything they said hook, line and sinker for the first 25 years of my life,' one person recalled. 'After a while, they were teaching me things that just weren't adding up. At first, I kind of shrugged it off but, over the years, things started to become a little much.
'Then they started introducing go-bags. Sort of a bag of essentials for when the end of the world comes. They wanted us to have enough supplies to last several weeks so we could escape civilization and live off the land,' the Reddit user explained.
'I honestly thought they were playing a prank on us and it would be revealed as a hidden camera joke. Nope...they were serious.
'I decided that day that being a JW was not going to be in my long-term plans in life. No f*****g way was I going to be a doomsday prepper. Peace out!!!'
One woman shared that she and her husband accidentally joined a cult in Columbus, Ohio, admitting that they should have been tipped off by the name of the group.

'There were a lot of red flags that we just looked past,' she noted, 'but we knew it was time to leave when we went to a sermon about donating money to your church, which we understand, but they were saying you should donate so much that you can barely cover your expenses and you rely on the church for your other needs (so you basically feel indebted to them).
'The kicker was then someone said, "Yeah, Americans do this thing where they set money aside and they call it saving for retirement," and literally everyone in the room jumped in about how wrong that concept was.'
Meanwhile, one man said he abandoned a devil-worshipping cult when he realized they were 'serious about summoning demons and Satan by sacrificing animals.'
'Now I know this is cliche, but my girlfriend at the time wanted me to join. She was one of those sexy goth girls that guys always wanted in high school. I was 18 at the time,' he explained.
The Reddit user said he was only in the cult for about three weeks, noting that it initially felt like he was going to church except they talked 'about how the devil actually built the world.'
'I only kept going because of my girlfriend and the free food, but once [they] started pulling out live animals, killing them, and finally drinking the animal's blood that's when I decided to leave,' he said. 'I couldn't sleep for weeks and was worried that a demon would take my soul for leaving.'
