Police are investigating after an eight-year-old girl, her mother and her uncle were found dead in the family's above-ground swimming pool at a home in New Jersey.

Concerned neighbors called the cops after hearing screaming from the property in East Brunswick yesterday afternoon.

They initially feared someone had fallen but when police arrived they found the woman, 32, man, 62, and child unresponsive in the pool.

Police fear the screaming were the mother's desperate pleas for help.

The family - who moved into the house in the last month - were pronounced dead in the back yard, NBC reports.

Brunswick Police Chief Frank Losacco said: 'This is a devastating day for our entire community.

'It is too early to determine exactly what happened.

'We are working with the Middlesex County Prosecutors office and will release information as it develops.' 

Middlesex County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death in the next few months.
