FIRE TRAGEDY Second child dies in horror blaze after inferno spread rapidly through East Ham family home – with 3 still in hospital
A SECOND child has died after a house fire in east London - with a third critically ill.
Firefighters were called out to the blaze at just after 8.30am yesterday in Napier Road, East Ham - with one child initially pronounced dead and five other people taken to hospital.
Two other children and two adults remain in hospital.
The children and one of the adults were previously said to be critical.
The Met Police all six people are believed to be all part of the same family and investigators currently do not believe the cause of the fire is suspicious.
Enquiries are ongoing to identify and inform other family members.DCI Jonathan Burks, one of the senior officers responsible for policing Newham, said: “I appreciate that local people will be shocked and saddened by this tragic event.
"We share those sentiments and will do all we can, alongside LFB, the local authority and other partners, to provide the family and local community with support and answers to their questions about this heart-breaking incident."
London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne said: “This is a terribly sad incident and the thoughts of all of us at London Fire Brigade are with the family, friends and all those affected at this difficult time.
“Staff will be in the local community over the coming days to offer support and advice where needed.
“The welfare of our staff is very important and all those involved will be offered support from our counselling and trauma service.
“Sadly, one child was pronounced dead at the scene yesterday morning, and overnight a second child died in hospital.
"Two other children and two adults were also taken to hospital, where the children and one adult remain in a serious condition.”
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a house on Napier Road in East Ham.
Half of the first floor and ground floor of a terraced house was damaged by the fire.
The Brigade was called at 8.27am and the fire was under control by 9.09am.
Crews from East Ham, Barking, Stratford, Ilford and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade’s fire investigators and the Metropolitan Police Service.
