The bloodbath happened on the Grenelle quay, in the 15th arrondissement of the French capital, at around 10pm.

France's Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed "passers-by" were assaulted in the Quai de Grenelle area.

He said the attacker had been arrested and the injured person was being treated by emergency services.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr Darmanin said: "The police have just courageously arrested an assailant attacking passers-by in Paris, around the Quai de Grenelle.

"One deceased person and one injured person treated by the Paris Fire Brigade. Please avoid the area."

According to local media, the attacker is a French national and is currently in custody and facing a possible murder charge.

It's added that he was "immobilised with an electric stun gun" as he ran up the Avenue du Parc de Passy

Le Parisien is reporting that a knife and hammer were used in the attack, leaving another British tourist injured.

It added that the person who died was also a tourist with dual German and Philippine nationality.

"A hammer was used to hit the man over the head."

The Englishman was rushed to hospital, where his condition was later described as "stable".
