Comer Subpoenas DHS And Secret Service Officials Over Alleged Obstruction In Hunter Biden Probe
House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced on Tuesday that he has subpoenaed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Secret Service officials, including DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, over the alleged obstruction of a congressional inquiry into the criminal investigation of President Joe Biden‘s son, Hunter Biden.
The subpoenas seek documents and testimony related to how the Biden administration is dealing with claims that the elder Biden’s transition team and Secret Service headquarters were informed the night before investigators planned to interview Hunter Biden in December 2020. As told by an IRS whistleblower and ex-FBI agent, investigators were then instructed to stand by and ultimately never got permission to proceed.
Comer sent the subpoenas, which have deadlines listed for later this month, with accompanying letters asserting that the DHS Office of Legislative Affairs sought to block Secret Service officials from responding to information requests from multiple House committees about the alleged tip-off. The Secret Service is part of DHS.
“The Department of Justice initiated the Biden family coverup and now DHS under the leadership of Secretary Mayorkas is complicit in it. Investigators were never able to interview Hunter Biden during the criminal investigation because Secret Service headquarters and the Biden transition team were tipped off about the planned interview,” Comer said in a statement.
“This is just one of many examples of the misconduct and politicization during the Department of Justice’s investigation,” the chairman added. “The Oversight Committee – along with the Judiciary and Ways and Means Committees — is seeking interviews with key witnesses, including employees at the Secret Service. The Department of Homeland Security is obstructing our investigation by muzzling the Secret Service from providing a response to Congress. The American people deserve transparency, not obstruction.”
A Secret Service spokesperson told The Daily Wire that DHS would respond for both entities.
A DHS official refuted the claim that the agency obstructed a response to Congress and insisted that DHS was working to respond to the inquiry through “standard procedures.” The official also said Comer’s subpoenas were “entirely without basis.”
Although Department of Justice leaders have pushed back against claims of politicization and Democrats have pushed back on GOP efforts to conduct their own investigations, Comer insisted in his statement that House Republicans “will hold the Biden Administration accountable for running interference for the Biden family’s corruption and criminal activity.”
The subpoena announcement comes nearly a month after Attorney General Merrick Garland granted Delaware’s U.S. Attorney David Weiss special counsel status after the collapse of a plea agreement with Hunter Biden involving tax evasion and gun charges.
Beyond the Hunter Biden matter, Republicans have criticized Mayorkas over his handling of U.S. border security, leading to investigations and articles of impeachment.
