Shocking footage shows car ploughing into drinkers standing outside Welsh pub - injuring one woman

 This is the shocking moment a driver ploughed into a crowd of people standing outside a pub.

One woman was hit when the car mowed into the drinkers outside the Royal Oak pub in Pontypool, South Wales, in the early hours of Saturday. 

CCTV footage shows several people rushing forward and punching the car windows to get to the driver sitting inside after the collision.

The clip starts with unsuspecting customers standing in the beer garden when the dark blue vehicle comes speeding towards them.

Several people rush over to the car to confront the driver and can be seen punching the car windows and trying to hit and grab the man as he gets out following the collision at 1am.

Police say a 30-year-old man has now been arrested in connection with the crash.

The woman was rushed to hospital but has since been discharged. Her injuries are not thought to be life-changing.

A pub spokesman said: 'We want to pass on our best wishes to the lady hurt in the incident. She was and remains to be our first priority. We have been in constant contact and will do all we can to help her.

'The event has shook us as a pub, as we work hard to ensure a safe and friendly environment for all our customers, old and new.

'We want to thank each and every person who helped us. This is the type of community spirit we have, and we are so grateful to each of them for helping to contain the situation.'

Gwent Police say a man was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while over the legal limit of alcohol, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A force spokeswoman said: 'We received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian outside the Royal Oak pub in George Street, Pontnewynydd, Pontypool, on Saturday, 29 January, shortly before 1.05am.

'A woman attended hospital for treatment but has since been discharged. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

'A 30-year-old man from Pontypool was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.'
