Pakistani woman pregnant with a girl has two-inch nail hammered into her HEAD by faith healer so she can give birth to a BOY

A woman pregnant with a girl in Pakistan had a nail hammered into her head by a faith healer who claimed it would 'guarantee' that she gave birth to a boy.

The woman arrived at the Lady Reading Hospital in the city of Peshawar with the two-inch nail pierced into the top of her forehead after the faith healer said doing so would ensure she would have a boy.She initially told hospital staff that she had hammered the nail into her head herself on the advice of the faith healer, before later admitting he had carried out the act.

The pregnant woman, who already has three daughters, had earlier been told by doctors she was going to have another girl.

She decided to visit the faith healer after her husband threatened to divorce her if she failed to give birth to a boy, Geo News reports.

Doctor Haider Khan said the pregnant woman arrived at a hospital after trying to extract the nail herself with pliers.

He said the pregnant woman had the nail hammered into her head on the advice of a healer after discovering she was having a girl.

The doctor said: 'She was fully conscious, but was in immense pain.'

An X-ray showed the two-inch nail had pierced the top of the woman's forehead but missed her brain.

Dr Khan said a hammer or other heavy object was used to knock it in.

Peshawar police said victim support officers have been directed to meet the woman to try and get details of the incident.

They added that 'legal action will be taken' against those involved.

'We will soon lay our hands on the sorcerer.'

Exploitative faith healers, whose practices are rooted in Sufism, are common across Muslim-majority Pakistan despite the disapproval of some schools of Islam.

In South Asia, a son is often believed to offer better financial security to parents than daughters.
