19-year-old claims she was rejected for a job at a grocery store because of her playful outgoing VOICEMAIL message - revealing a manager insisted it was 'inappropriate' (despite it containing NO rude words)

A 19-year-old woman says that a manager rejected her for a job at a grocery store because her outgoing voicemail message wasn't 'appropriate' — but viewers hear nothing wrong with it.

Zanaya Jones took to TIkTok to play the outgoing message, which was recorded in a playful, sing-song voice. 'What's up, what's up, what's up,' she says. 'It's your girl Naya and I'm back with another banking banger. Leave your number, yeah, and all that, yeah.'

But when a manager at a Harris Teeter grocery store in Summerville, South Carolina called her about her job application, he was put off by the tone of her message — and told her so.

The man immediately begins his voicemail in a lecturing tone without even introducing himself or identifying himself as a Harris Teeter employee.

'Yes Ms. Jones, I recommend if you apply for a job and you expect somebody to call you, that you have a more appropriate response on your voicemail,' he chastises.

'So, thank you for applying and no need to give us a call back her at Harris Teeter. Thank you, bye,' he concludes.

'Seems like it would've been a hostile work environment anyways. He could have just not left a message but he wanted to be petty,' wrote one.

'Same guy probably can't hire anyone right now and is short staffed,' said another, while a third echoed: 'Same guy talking about the "labor shortage."

'This is not OK,' wrote a third, while a fourth chimed in: 'Companies like this think they own you.'

'Dodged a bullet because it's a huge red flag that upon hearing your vm & deciding to not hire you, he still felt entitled to lecture you for your personal vm,' said one more.

'Oh sorry you're a real person with a personality and not a personified company,' snarked another.

Commenters were even more baffled once they heard the offending outgoing voicemail.

'Maaan I thought you were cursing or something the way he was acting. This is adorable,' wrote one.

'It wasn't vulgar. It wasn't professional but it wasn't bad,' wrote another, while several said that Jones' outgoing message would actually make them more likely to hire her.

Speaking to BuzzFeed, Jones agreed that she was better off without this particular job.

'I think I dodged a bullet,' she said. 'When I'm on that side of town, I go into [the store] to shop and the customer service is horrible.'
