Postman SACKED after leaving injured OAP lying in snow and begging for help because he was ‘too knackered’
A POSTMAN has been sacked after he left an injured OAP lying in the snow because he was "too knackered" to help.
Thomas McCafferty walked away and abandoned Patricia Stewart, 72, during his shift in Bainsford, Falkirk, in February.
Patricia was left pleading for help as she lay in freezing conditions, after McCafferty was caught on video saying to her: "I can't help. I'm knackered. Absolutely knackered.”
The gran-of-two was left crying in the snow for 20 minutes with a lump "as big as an egg" on her head.
Royal Mail has confirmed McCafferty has been sacked after an internal probe into the shocking incident.
A spokesperson said the postal service expects "the highest standards of behaviour" from its staff.
Royal Mail also apologised for "distress" caused to Patricia and her family, who were left fuming.
After the incident, Patricia told The Sun Online: "Twenty minutes I was shouting 'help' and I was crying. I was lying partly in the snow and I banged my head."It’s still sore. I can’t even comb my hair because it hurts.
"There was a big lump on it, as big as an egg."
She added: "Even if he was knackered, at the end of the day that’s his job.
"When I used to work and I was knackered I still carried on, but you wouldn’t leave somebody lying there in the snow."
ROYAL FAIL
We previously told how Patricia's loved ones slammed the “disgusting” clip as they blasted the postie for his actions.
Patricia's niece Sheryl told on social media how the OAP was helped inside by a kind-hearted Hermes worker a short time later - who then fetched a neighbour.
Sheryl told The Scottish Sun: "I was shocked and disgusted. I’ve been looking after my aunt since September. I thought it didn’t sound right at first - nobody would leave a 72-year-old on the ground.
"But then I saw the video. I was in disbelief. If I hadn’t seen the video, I wouldn’t have believed it. It beggars belief. I don’t know what the guy was thinking. It was bizarre."
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail expects the highest standards of behaviour from our people while out on deliveries and collections at all times. We regularly remind our postmen and postwomen of the important role they play in their local communities.
"We can confirm that the individual concerned has left the business. We have also now completed our internal investigation but we are unable to comment further on any outcome for confidentiality reasons.
"We are sorry for the distress this incident has caused. We have been in touch with the customer concerned to express our apologies again and to update them following the conclusion of the investigation.”
