Twelve police officers injured in Europa League clash: Seven arrests after cops were attacked by Polish fans at last night's Leicester v Legia Warsaw match

A dozen police officers were injured and seven arrests were made as Leicester City's Europa League match descended into violent chaos last night.

Two officers were taken to hospital for treatment after being attacked by fans of Polish club Legia Warsaw in the away fans' section of the King Power Stadium last night.

Both Leicester's fans and police were pelted with missiles in the second half of their Europa League group match that ended up being marred by the violent scenes.

Video from the scene shows a horde of furious Legia fans screaming at Leicester FC supporters, before the violent thugs took on police as they tried to break through barriers separating the fans.

UEFA has promised an investigation after flares were set off and some fans attempted to breach the segregated line, assaulting officers in the process.

Dozens of police equipped with riot gear managed to push the 1,134 Legia fans back after a battle that lasted about 10 minutes.

Order was eventually restored by the end of the match, with the Polish club's travelling support being held behind in the stadium well after the final whistle. A dozen police officers were injured and seven arrests were made as Leicester City's Europa League match against Legia Warsaw descended into violent chaos last night

Midway through the second half of Leicester’s 3-1 win, supporters housed in the away end attempted to reach Leicester supporters by storming through the lines of security that separated them.

In video shared widely across social media, a heavy police presence can be seen in the away stand as officers put themselves between the rival club's supporters, prompting a melee.

A violent brawl broke out as sections of the Polish club's following clashed with riot police inside the stadium for 10-minutes.

Two officers were taken to hospital, one with a broken wrist and the other with concussion, after police responded to disorder which broke out within the away fans' section during the second half, the force said.   Legia Warsaw fans caused trouble during their side's Europa League clash with Leicester FC on Thursday

‘While I am pleased that our officers responded well and managed to contain the away fans within their section and minimise contact between them and the home crowd, it’s extremely disappointing that a number of fans acted the way they did and twelve officers were injured during the incident,’ said Julia Debenham, assistant chief constable of Leicestershire Police.

‘This type of behaviour is not acceptable and we will be investigating the incident fully in order to bring those offenders to justice.’

Leicester were fined £17,000 earlier this season after incidents between rival fans during their 2-2 draw with Napoli in September.
