Meanwhile a string of five star reviews for the fast-working product claim it leaves skin 'glowing,' with others noting a visible 'reduction in fine lines' and 'improvement with redness.'

WHAT IS RETINAL?

Retinal (Retinaldehyde) is a Vitamin A derivative that gives the formula its yellow colour.

It is a close pre-cursor to retinoic acid, making it one of the most potent forms of Retinol available.

With an optimised surface release system more effective than encapsulation, Retinol and Retinal are embedded into micro-sponges delivering stable forms of Retinol and Retinal more evenly and continuously onto skin.

But Dr Sophie Shotter notes that while everyone has heard of Retinol, far fewer people have heard of Retinal.

Speaking to FEMAIL, she commented: 'When Retinol is applied to the skin, it is converted to Retinal and then to Retinoic acid which is the molecule that the skin can actually use to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

'So Retinal is one step further along the chain of "usefulness" than Retinol.'

The expert went on to explain  the benefits of Retinal over Retinol, adding: 'It provides a quicker onset of action than retinol (up to 11 times faster).'

Designed to be used at night, the fast-absorbing StriVectin Advanced Retinol Nightly Renewal Moisturiser is clinically proven to work on a broad range of skin concerns, from enlarged pores to deep wrinkles and fine lines.

Not only that, it also pledges to restore radiance and luminosity, while visibly improving uneven skin tone, elasticity and firmness - the secret to a youthful-looking complexion.

And for beauty buffs who are familiar with the key ingredients, here's the science behind the hard-working formula.

The powerful night moisturiser contains retinol which is boosted by NIA-114™, the brand's patented form of Niacin, which has been shown to boost the efficacy of retinol while limiting sensitivity.

This game-changing molecule - which is backed by 35 years of research, 30 independent clinical studies, 90 global patents and 150 published papers - is clinically proven to strengthen the skin barrier and supercharge the performance of its other ingredients.

Plus, unlike typical retinol formulas that have to gradually be applied over time to minimise irritation, this fast, effective formula is expertly calibrated to be gentle enough for nightly use, right from the start.

And 97% of users who reported the formula was effective yet gentle on the skin* agree, with another 97% claiming their skin felt moisturised, nourished and comforted*

So, how exactly does this unique formula work to help prevent irritation?

The powerful forms of retinol are balanced by a skin-soothing complex comprised of Ginger Root Extract and Beta-Glucan which work to soothe dry skin and reduce visible redness.

But don't just take our word for it.

The combination of supercharged ingredients has been shown to be a winning formula, with 100 per cent of people who trialled the cream reporting that skin did not feel or look irritated after 8 weeks of use*

And perhaps best of all? This powerful blend of ingredients work expertly together while we slumber, making sure we wake up with smooth, radiant and youthful-looking skin - no matter how little sleep we've managed to get.

STILL WORRIED ABOUT USING RETINOL? HERE'S WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...

Dr Ana, skin doctor at cosmetic surgery clinic Kat & Co, told FEMAIL: 'Vitamin A derivatives, also known as the umbrella term "retinoid", is the holy grail group of anti-ageing ingredients.'

'They have the strongest evidence base for not only preventing signs of ageing of the skin but can actually reverse photodamage.'

'I always advise my patients that everyone who wants to combat skin ageing should be on a retinoid once they start noticing early signs of photodamage to the skin.'

The expert goes on to say how retinol and retinal can be combined with other soothing and nourishing ingredients to limit the expected reactions and hence enable more frequent use and thereby better and quicker results.

'These can be applied separately however sometimes they are conveniently combined into the formulation to make the product more user friendly and pleasant,' she said.

Speaking of the other key ingredients in StriVectin's Advanced Retinol Nightly Renewal Moisturiser, she added: 'Triglycerides are excellent for replenishing and strengthening the barrier function of the skin to improve the skin’s defence against irritation, while glycerin hydrates and brings moisture into the skin to combat dehydrations.'

Dr Simon Zokaie, dermatologist and medical director of The Linia Skin Clinic, also went on to praise Vitamin A as being the 'gold-standard treatment for anti-ageing.'

'Vitamin A comes in many different forms which include retinol and retinoic acid and now there’s the newer generation molecules such as retinal, also known as retinaldehyde,' he explained.

'Retinal has a different molecular structure to retinol which makes it 11x faster than retinol to help improve your skin’s nightly repair mechanism to boost collagen production and improve skin texture and completion. Because of this, retinal is ideal for aged and mature skin types that want to see a significant improvement in fines lines and wrinkles as quickly as possible.'

Elsewhere, Harley Street dermatologist Dr Emma Craythorne, who is also host of The Bad Skin Clinic, explained the safety of the ingredient.

'Retinal is one step closer to retinoic acid than retinol so may be more effective than it,' she explained. 'Retinal is still a lot weaker than retinoic acid.'

'This is also part of the reason why it is likely to be less irritating, as it relies on the skin to convert it therefore it is not necessarily all converted in one go and the side effects are not as marked.'

She added: 'Retinoic acid has been studied in the skin for many years and it has been shown to be a safe and effective for the treatment of photodamage, photoaging and atypical hyperpigmentation.'
