Tributes have flooded in for the toddler - named by locals as AliJayden 'AJ' McGuire - following an incident in Park Avenue in Dungannon, Co Tyrone on Friday evening.
AJ was rushed to hospital that afternoon with a head injury but later died.
Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's (PSNI) major investigation team arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
Last night, AJ's heartbroken grandfather Jerry described the tot as his 'pride and joy'.

Elsewhere, a neighbour told BelfastLive: 'She had just turned two. The giggles of her were just beautiful... she was a wee doll. It's just so sad.'
Referring to AJ's mother, Jade, the neighbour, who didn't want to be named, added: ''She is an adoring mummy, I don't know how she will get over it.
'I wish I could just put my arms round her.'
Meanwhile, a number of friends took to social media to remember the young child.
One wrote: 'You were too precious for this world, rest easy baby girl.'
Another added: 'My heart is broken in two for you all. You were way too good for this earth.
'May you rest in peace, precious lil angel. I'm thinking of you all this is so so hard

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: 'The child was admitted to hospital yesterday afternoon after Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended an address in Park Avenue in Dungannon.
'The child later died in hospital.
'As part of our investigation, we have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder, and he remains in custody this morning.
'A post-mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of the child's death.
'Our thoughts are with the child's family, which is being supported by family liaison officers.
'We will update you in due course but, at this time, there are no further details
