The American weathered the storm, and pointed at McGregor after checking one of his calf kicks just 20 seconds in before pushing the Irishman back with a strong right hand.

McGregor engaged in a clinch and the physically superior Poirier took the invitation to land the takedown on his rival, who strengths lie in striking rather than wrestling.

And Poirier maintained that the fracture was the result of a checked calf kick in the opening stages of the fight, while 'karma' was the reason for his latest victory.

'You never want to get a win that way but what happened was a result of checking a kick, I am more than sure of it,' he said in the post-fight press conference..

'He got what he had coming to him, karma is a mirror and I busted my a** for so long to put myself in this position, I doubled down on myself after beating him in January when they offered me a title shot and it paid off.'

The Louisianan also expressed his unhappiness with McGregor's dark comments before the fight, in which he said Poirier would be murdered and that he would leave on a stretcher.

'He did hit me with a good cross like the last fight. Takedown was easy. He put his fingers in my gloves to land the upkicks. This guy is a dirtbag, man.'

But McGregor was in no mood to accept defeat as the pair exchanged terse words in the immediate aftermath.

'I was boxing the bleedin' head off him. Usual s*** diving to close the distance. This is not over. Your wife is in my DMs. I landed on my wonky leg like Anderson Silva that one time,' he told Rogan while sat on the Octagon floor.
