Reckless motorists mount the kerb and drive along grass verges to escape school-run gridlock on London street

  Footage filmed from a house near Merryhills Primary School in Enfield shows motorists taking the reckless measures to evade the gridlock on Bincote Road at 3.20pm on March 12.

  They were pictured mounting the pavements at speed as pedestrians, including a child on a scooter, try to safely use the paths.The return of the borough's primary schools last week coincided with roadworks closing key roads in the area and redirecting traffic down residential streets, causing chaos.    The street soon became impassable due to cars parked on either side of the road leading motorists to take matters into their own hands and drive over the verges.

  There are three schools in the area, Merryhills Primary, Grange Park Primary and Highlands Secondary School. 

  Local resident Glenn Wilson, 28, shared the footage on social media and wrote: 'I can't believe what I am seeing here.'

  Dan Logan commented: 'It's like the scenes in an end of the world movie when people are desperate to get home to their loved ones.'

  Lee Cox replied: 'There's no deterrent anymore and people genuinely don't give a toss. Police either don't care, are under resourced or it's just not a priority anymore.'

  Renos Christou wrote: 'Absolutely shocking. No regard for the safety of the kids walking on the pavement!' 

  Mr Wilson was filming the traffic in order to show Transport for London that their plans to introduce a new bus service, with additional stops to the heavily congested route, are ludicrous. 

  Speaking today Mr Wilson said: 'You will find we all park on our drives so our cars don't get hit, the drivers of the parked cars are parents picking their kids up from school.

  'Many residents, including myself have been contacting TfL, local MPs and councillors to no avail.'

  Following a consultation last year TfL plan to proceed with the proposed additional bus route despite an outpouring of negative responses.

  Transport for London and Enfield London Borough Council have been contacted for comment. 

  The Metropolitan Police confirmed that they were not called to attend the incident.
