Prince Charles reveals he's 'thrilled' as father Prince Philip, 99, leaves hospital to be reunited with the Queen at Windsor after four-week hospital stay - and reveals he's already spoken to him 'several times'

  • Prince Philip spent 28 nights at London at King Edward VII's Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital
  • His longest ever stay came after his initial admission to private hospital with infection on February 16
  • Duke of Edinburgh underwent successful procedure on pre-existing heart condition at Barts on March 3
  • He then returned to King Edward VII's Hospital a few days later to recuperate and continue his Prince Charles today said he was 'thrilled' that his father the Duke of Edinburgh had left hospital following a month under the care of medical staff after being admitted with an infection and later undergoing heart surgery.

Prince Philip, 99, the nation's longest-serving consort, spent 28 nights as a patient in London at King Edward VII's Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital - his longest ever stay. Philip was initially admitted on a precautionary basis for an infection, before having a heart operation midway through his four-week period in hospital.

The 'Iron Duke' was photographed leaving King Edward VII's Hospital in Marylebone at about 10.30am today, with screens obscuring him in a wheelchair for the most part, before getting into a car and being driven away.

Philip, who is set to celebrate his 100th birthday in June, headed to Windsor Castle to be reunited with the Queen after a month without seeing her, arriving within less than an hour. Sources said the Duke was in 'good spirits'.

Charles, who was visiting a pop-up coronavirus vaccination centre at Finsbury Park Mosque in North London this afternoon, said he was delighted that his father was out of hospital, revealing: 'I am thrilled about it.' When asked if he had spoken to Philip yet, Charles replied: 'Oh yes, I have spoken to him several times.'

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said in a statement issued at about 11.45am today: 'The Duke of Edinburgh has today been discharged from King Edward VII's Hospital and has returned to Windsor Castle, following treatment for an infection and a successful procedure for a pre-existing condition.

'His Royal Highness wishes to thank all the medical staff who looked after him at both King Edward VII's Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital, and everyone who has sent their good wishes.'

The Duke was initially taken by car to King Edward VII's Hospital on February 16, after telling his doctor he felt unwell. But two weeks later he was moved to St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London by ambulance.

Philip will have much to catch up on with the Queen following a dramatic week that saw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plunge the monarchy into a crisis by accusing a member of the Royal Family of racism - not the Queen or Philip - and claiming that Meghan Markle received no support with her mental health problems.

The Duke of Edinburgh underwent a successful procedure on a pre-existing heart condition at Barts on March 3, before returning to King Edward VII's Hospital a few days later to recuperate and continue his treatment.

Philip was visited in King Edward VII's Hospital on February 20 by the Prince of Wales, who made a 200-mile round trip from his Gloucestershire home and stayed for about 30 minutes.

The news Philip had left hospital was welcomed by royal experts, including Phil Dampier, author of Prince Philip: A Lifetime of Wit and Wisdom, who tweeted: 'Fantastic news. Prince Philip has left hospital after nearly a month. On to the ton!' Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams added: 'Fantastic news that the Duke of Edinburgh has been discharged from hospital and has returned to Windsor Castle.

'The soubriquet, the Iron Duke, surely applies and everyone will send him good wishes. We look forward to commemorating his centenary on June 10.'

Royal expert Ingrid Seward added: 'Thrilled to see that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has left hospital and returned to Windsor. His return will be a huge relief and support to the Queen.'

Timeline of the Duke of Edinburgh's hospital stay and Harry & Meghan's Oprah interview

    • Tuesday, February 16, 2021: The duke is admitted to King Edward VII's Hospital on a precautionary basis after feeling unwell. He travels from Windsor Castle by car. Philip is said to be in 'good spirits' and walks into the private hospital unaided. He is expected to stay for a few days.
    • Friday, February 19: Sources say Philip is now expected to remain in hospital for 'observation and rest' over the weekend and into the next week.
    • Harry and Meghan are stripped of their prestigious patronages as the couple confirmed Megxit has become permanent.
    • Saturday, February 20: The Prince of Wales makes a 200-mile round trip to see his father, spending around half an hour at the hospital.
    • Tuesday, February 23: Seven days after the duke was admitted, the Palace says he is being treated for an infection and is 'comfortable and responding to treatment', but is not expected to leave hospital for several more days. The Earl of Wessex says the duke is a 'lot better' and looking forward to getting out.
    • Friday, February 26: Harry says a 'toxic' atmosphere created by the British press forced him and his family to leave the UK, in an interview with James Corden
    • Monday, March 1: Philip is transferred in an ambulance to St Bartholomew's Hospital for treatment for an infection and testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition, Buckingham Palace says. The duke is shielded from public view by large umbrellas as he leaves King Edward VII's Hospital.
    • A preview clip of the Oprah Winfrey interview shows Harry saying his biggest fear is that 'history would repeat itself' in a reference to his mother's death, while the host is also seen asking Meghan if she was 'silent or silenced', but her answer is not revealed.
    • Tuesday, March 2: The Queen continues with her official duties by holding calls with the Chancellor and the head of the British Army.
    • Wednesday March 3: Philip undergoes surgery on his heart. The Duchess of Cornwall says of her father-in-law: 'We heard today that he's slightly improving. So, that's very good news. We'll keep our fingers crossed.'
    • A spokesman for Meghan says she is 'saddened' by a report in the Times that she faced a bullying complaint during her time at Kensington Palace.
    • Thursday, March 4: Buckingham Palace announces Philip has had a 'successful procedure' for a pre-existing heart condition at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The palace adds: 'His Royal Highness will remain in hospital for treatment, rest and recuperation for a number of days.'
    • Friday, March 5: Philip returns to King Edward VII's Hospital to continue his recovery.
    • Sunday, March 7 – Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey airs in the US. They make allegations including accusing a member of the royal family of making a racist comment about their son Archie.
    • Tuesday, March 9 – Buckingham Palace issues a statement on behalf of the Queen. It says the Queen is 'saddened' to hear the full extent of the challenges faced by the Sussexes and the issues raised around race are 'concerning'.
    • Tuesday, March 16: Philip leaves King Edward VII's Hospital after a total of 28 days in hospital

Earlier, police blocked access for vehicles to King Edward VII's Hospital, as four officers arrived on motorcycles to join a dozen at the entrance.

Concern about the Duke of Edinburgh has been heightened because of his advanced age and his hospital stay comes amid troubled times for the royal family.

While Philip was in hospital, Prince Harry and Meghan faced calls to postpone their interview with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey because Philip was unwell, but it went ahead and the couple made a string of claims about their struggles as working royals.

The Queen, 94, said in a statement afterwards that the issues are concerning, but that 'some recollections may vary' and the matter is a family one that will be dealt with privately.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Cambridge defended the House of Windsor, saying during a visit to a school in East London last week: 'We're very much not a racist family.'

Philip has been treated for heart problems in the past and in 2011 was taken to hospital by helicopter from Sandringham after suffering chest pains as the royal family was preparing for Christmas.

He was treated for a blocked coronary artery at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire and underwent a minimally invasive procedure of coronary stenting.

The duke had been spending the latest lockdown at Windsor with the Queen for their safety, alongside a reduced household of staff dubbed HMS Bubble.

The couple, who have been married for 73 years, received their first Covid-19 jabs in January.

Meanwhile Buckingham Palace has instructed an external law firm to assist with its investigation into bullying allegations made against the Duchess of Sussex.

Royal aides announced earlier this month that past and present employees of Meghan and Harry would be invited to speak in confidence about their experiences, after it was alleged she drove out two personal assistants and staff were 'humiliated' on several occasions.

Now it is understood an outside legal company will help Buckingham Palace's human resources team as it examines the circumstance of the allegations, first reported by the Times newspaper.

According to other reports, the Sussexes are not expected to be asked to contribute to the review, but the duchess has written to the palace asking for any documents, emails or texts relating to the allegations against her.

Lawyers for the duchess have denied the bullying allegations.

Harry was also accused of bullying, with the Times reporting earlier this month that a member of staff told a colleague the couple were 'outrageous bullies'.

When the bullying allegations were first made, Buckingham Palace said in a statement it was 'very concerned' about them, and stressed the Royal Household 'does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace'.

It added: 'Accordingly, our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article. Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned.'

The investigation was launched after the Times reported that Jason Knauf, the Sussexes' then communications secretary, made a bullying complaint in October 2018 in an apparent attempt to force Buckingham Palace to protect staff.

A source told the newspaper that Harry begged his senior aide not to take the matter further, but it also reported that lawyers for the duke and duchess deny the meeting took place and that Harry would not have interfered with staff matters.

From a blocked coronary artery to a urinary infection, Philip's health issues over past decade

Prince Philip had been enjoying excellent health for a 99-year-old and still had an active lifestyle until his recent hospital admission. In recent years he has struggled a little more with illness, suffering from a number of ailments over the past decade, including:

    • December 2011, four days in hospital: Prince Philip is airlifted to Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire from Sandringham two days before Christmas after suffering chest pains, and undergoes surgery for a blocked coronary artery
    • June 2012, six days: Philip is taken to hospital after developing a urinary infection during the river pageant to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee
    • June 2013, 11 days: He has abdominal surgery for an undisclosed condition and spends his 92nd birthday in hospital
    • December 2016: Both the Queen and Philip suddenly cancel plans to leave London for their festive break in Norfolk after they both come down with heavy colds
    • June 2016: The Duke pulls out of a Battle of Jutland anniversary event citing a minor ailment
    • June 2017, three days: Philip is admitted to hospital as 'a precautionary measure' for an infection arising from a pre-existing condition
    • April 2018, 11 days: The Duke spends nearly a fortnight in hospital following his successful hip replacement
    • December 2019, five days: He is treated at King Edward Hospital in London for a 'pre-existing condition'

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: 'Our commitment to look into the circumstances around allegations from former staff of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is being taken forward but we will not be providing a public commentary on it.'

A spokesman for the Sussexes declined to comment.

Soon after the bullying allegations were made, the monarchy was left reeling after Harry and Meghan's interview with chat show host Oprah Winfrey, in which they made a string of allegations, including accusing a member of the royal family of making a racist comment about their son Archie.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis paid tribute to their 'Granny Diana' on Mother's Day, and said: 'Papa is missing you.'

Pictures of cards made by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's three children were posted on social media by Kensington Palace.

The palace said Mother's Day will be 'different once again' this year, adding that many people will be looking forward to a time in the not-too-distant future when they can give their mother a hug again.

Other royal households also celebrated Mother's Day through posts on social media.

Buckingham Palace posted a black-and-white photo of the Queen as a young girl with the Queen Mother.

'To all mums everywhere, we wish you a very special Mother's Day,' the post said.

Clarence House posted two photos on Sunday of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall with their mothers.

In the photo of Charles, he can be seen laughing with the Queen during a visit to the Braemar Highland Games in 2010.

The second photo shows Camilla in 1990 at home with her own mother Rosalind Shand.

Princess Eugenie has also joined in the celebrations on her first Mother's Day following the birth of her son.

August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, the newest addition to the royal family, was born on February 9.

Eugenie posted a photo of August lying on a blanket outdoors, wearing a white jumper and hat with fluffy rabbit shoes and surrounded by daffodils.

She also posted a photo of her as a baby being held by her mother Sarah, Duchess of York.

How private King Edward VII's Hospital is the first choice for the royal family

Many a royal has been cared for at the private King Edward VII's Hospital.

From the Queen to the late Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother, the exclusive clinic in central London has been the first port of call for ailing members of The Firm for years.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted a number of times in recent years and the Duchess of Cornwall had a hysterectomy at the medical institution in 2012.

The first time the Queen was admitted to hospital was at the King Edward VII's in July 1982 when she had a wisdom tooth extracted.

Police at King Edward VII's Hospital in Marylebone today where Philip was initially taken after telling his doctor he felt unwell

In 2003, the clinic's surgeons also removed minor non-cancerous growths from the monarch's face and operated on her knee.

Tragedy struck in 2012 when nurse Jacintha Saldanha apparently killed herself after she was duped by two hoax callers who had phoned the hospital.

The Duchess of Cambridge was being treated at the hospital for severe morning sickness when pregnant with Prince George, and Ms Saldanha – believing the Australian pair were senior royals – put them through to a colleague who described in detail Kate's condition.

Philip was treated at the hospital for a short period in 2018 following a planned admission for a pre-existing but undisclosed condition.

The previous year the duke spent nine days receiving treatment and physio following a hip replacement at the institution.

King Edward VII's Hospital was established in 1899 by two sisters, Agnes and Fanny Keyser, who turned their home at 17 Grosvenor Crescent into a hospital for sick and wounded officers returning from the Boer War.

King Edward VII became the hospital's first patron – a role now held by the Queen. Edward VII, Charles's great-great grandfather, had an affair with Camilla's great-grandmother Alice Keppel.

The hospital moved to its present site in Beaumont Street in 1948, and in 2000 it changed its title to King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes.todaytreatment
