  • Gang reportedly attempted to raid nearby house before the break-in, police said
  • Witnesses said the woman ran screaming into the street as men fled the sceneCCTV footage captures a gang of machete wielding burglars going from one house to another in a string of 'reckless' attempted raids on homes in Huddersfield.

A woman and child were left terrified after four masked men burst in through the back door of their home on Thornton Lodge Road, a mile out of the city centre, at 5.55pm Thursday.

Witnesses said the woman ran screaming into the street outside and was soon followed by the four men brandishing baseball bats and machetes, who quickly got into a silver car and fled the scene.Thankfully nobody was hurt in the attempted aggravated burglary, but damage was done to a rear window of the house.Around ten minutes earlier, the same car had stopped on Winton Street in Lockwood - less than half a mile away - before the four men were captured on CCTV attempting to break into a house.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said the men appeared to abandon the break-in when they were spotted by a neighbour.

They got back into the silver car and started to drive away but stopped again a few doors down on the same street.

Another CCTV clip captures the four men getting back out of the car and walking towards another house, as if contemplating raiding it instead.

The men can be seen making a getaway in the silver coloured car. Patrols have been stepped up in the area by the Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team

But they abandon this plan too, getting back in the car and driving away.

The resident said: 'It's very shocking to see something like this in broad daylight. Are they just randomly targeting houses or do they know some houses they want to go to?

'And it is confusing when they know they have been seen to stop and try another one.

'That is why it is scary, because if they are that reckless and armed with weapons then someone could easily get hurt.'

Thankfully, nobody was injured in any of the incidents, which West Yorkshire Police are treating them as linked.

Anyone who witnessed either incident, who has relevant CCTV footage, or who saw a group of males leaving either street in a silver car is asked to contact the police

West Yorkshire Police believe the incidents - which took place within half-a-mile and ten minutes of each other are linked
