Sources say that Olsen is bearing up well but has concerns over the impact of the incident on his young family, who are thought to have moved out of the property.

The 31–year-old, who joined the Merseyside club from Roma in October until the end of the season, is the latest star to fall victim to thieves.

Last month, a safe was stolen from the home of Olsen's boss, Carlo Ancelotti. The 61-year-old's daughter was reported to have been at home in Crosby, Merseyside, when men wearing balaclavas broke in.

Sources have disclosed that the attack on Olsen, who has two children aged five and two, has triggered renewed concerns across the region.

Clubs have warned players of a potentially active organised gang and advised them to review security measures.

'This was horrific,' a source explained. 'Robin is made of stern stuff but he's obviously worried about the impact this will have on the family. It was all deeply traumatising. These were serious criminals. All of the clubs in the North West are aware of what's happened, and the players who live in the area have been told to look at the measures they have in place.'

Olsen was not in the squad who lost 2-0 at Chelsea on Monday night but that is understood to have been down to injury, rather than the after-effects of the attack.
