Moment car crashes into a small plane after it makes emergency landing on California highway

• Footage shows plane smashing into the side of a white sedan near the 580This is the shocking moment a small plane smashes into a car after its engine failed and forced it to make an emergency landing on a California highway 

  Pilot Josh Redsun and his father were headed home to Napa but the plane lost power almost immediately after taking off and Mr Redsun was forced to land in Livermore near the 580 on Isabel Avenue at 5.10 on Tuesday evening. 

  Footage filmed by a witness shows the plane smashing into the side of a white Lexus sedan with such force that it is shunted backwards and starts to shake. The Federal Aviation Agency, which is conducting an investigation into the engine failure, said there were no injuries to anyone involved in the crash. 

  Mr Redsun said that the four-seater plane was able to climb about 500 feet before it started diving towards the road below. 

  The quick-thinking pilot decided to use the overpass as a makeshift runway to land the single-engine propeller plane. Mr Redsun said that the plane started skidding and ended up on its side after hitting the white sedan.  

  He told CBS: 'I'm glad we're all OK. Power was lost on takeoff.'

  The plane, a Mooney M20E reportedly registered to a San Francisco resident named Maciel Cicero, reported a loss of engine power just after taking off from Livermore Municipal Airport. 

  Interstate 580 traffic was closed until 8.45pm.  

  The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the crash and will take the plane apart at Livermore Municipal Airport to find why it failed.
