According to other mums in the group the lines were caused when the chicken had trouble laying the egg.'It just happens when the hens are laying and the eggs get a bit stuck while they are still soft,' one woman said.

'My chickens did this all the time when they were young,' said another.Another said it usually happens in a chicken's first laying year and the eggs are 'perfectly fine to eat'.

The egg could also be 'body checked' which means the eggs were cracked during calcification.

'Some body checks are covered by a thick layer of calcium, forming an noticeable ridge or band around the egg. Body checks will increase if the hens are exited or gets startled late in the afternoon or early evening,' she said.
