It is billed as 'the Moscow of the Far East' for its heavy Russian influence due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway at the beginning of the 20th century.

The renowned annual festival of all things wintry began in 1985 and will celebrate its 37th edition in 2021.

The spectacular ice kingdom, officially known as the Ice and Snow World, was established in 1998 and has been the festival's crown jewel since.

The rainbow-coloured wonderland occupies 148 acres and is a little bigger than London's Hyde Park.

The impressive frozen high-rise, inspired by the shape of crystal columns, measures 40 metres (131 feet) in height and is as tall as a 12-storey office building.

The organisers have also built eight gigantic ice slides, a constant favourite for visitors in the past years.

The 2021 Harbin Ice and Snow Festival will begin on January 5 and last for a month or so. Its exact closing date will depend on when the ice begins to thaw.
