A quaint Cotsworld village is today at the centre of a murder probe after a woman in her 40s was found dead.

Police have this morning arrested a man in his 40s after the woman's body was discovered at a property in the picturesque village of Great Rissington, Gloucestershire.

The death of the woman, who has been named locally as self-employed upholsterer Tara Long, is currently being treated as unexplained.

Tributes have today been left on Ms Long's social media profile by friends.

One said: 'Rest in peace my beautiful soul sister and birthday twin, we had our ups and downs but the love was always there, the hugs and the laughter.

'We came into the world on the same day, but you have left us far too soon, there will always be a part of my heart missing but I know you will still be there with me.'

Another said: 'I am so saddened to hear you're gone my sweet. Rest in peace now sweet angel.'

A third posted: 'Sleep well now Tara, love to all your loved ones.'

According to her social media profile, Ms Long had lived in Great Rissington since 2013 and attended The Cotsworld School in the nearby town of Bourton-on-the-Water.

Neighbours have since expressed shock at news of a death in the village.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: 'People have been putting "rest in peace" on Facebook. It's sad. I didn't know her that much.'The police turned up at around 11.30am and haven't left since. There was an ambulance and first response here, then the police started coming.

'It's not really expected around here.'

Police say a man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the death. The man remains in police custody today.

A Gloucestershire Police spokesperson said: 'There will be ongoing police activity at the address due to an investigation which is taking place following the death of the woman.

'Police were called by the ambulance service at around 11.35am today to the address, where a woman was found deceased.

'At this early stage of an investigation the death of the woman, who is aged in her 40s, is being treated as unexplained while inquiries take place.

'Her next of kin are aware and the coroner has also been informed.

'Police are likely to remain in the area for a number of days while the investigation continues.'

Police say a man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the woman's death.

The man remains in police custody today. 

The force spokesperson added:  'With the ongoing police activity Gloucestershire Constabulary want to reassure the local community that there is no wider threat to the public in connection with this incident

According to the village's community website, Great Rissington is a 'stunning village'  in the Cotswold with a population of 367 people.

The village has a church, a pub and a local cricket club. It was once home to Victor Ambrose Eyles, a British geologist and science historian who lived there for a brief period in the early 1960s.
