'Letting off fireworks in the street and throwing objects into the road is reckless behaviour which could easily have led to serious injury. It's lucky no one was hurt.

'It's against the law to set off or throw fireworks in the street or a public place, and for under 18s to buy or possess fireworks.

'I'd ask anyone with information about what happened, including how these young people came to have fireworks, to get in touch with us.'

West Midlands Police confirmed they were stepping up patrols in the area.

It comes after similar scenes were seen across Birmingham City Centre over the weekend, with drivers, pedestrians and police cars targeted on Halloween.

Police in Sheffield were the victims of similar attacks to those in Birmingham, with shocking footage showing the moment an officer had to escape from his parked patrol car as fireworks can be seen exploding inside.

The disturbing incident was filmed on the evening of Saturday 31st October on the Wensley estate in Grimesthorpe.

Further footage has emerged showing a person letting off a volley of rockets as they drive down Coventry Road in Yardley, Birmingham.

Video of the footage has been posted online under the caption ‘Drive By Shooting’ and shows lit fireworks hurtling towards passing cars, parked vehicles and bus stops along the busy A45.

The missiles were directed at buildings, shops, and businesses including the prominent Platinum Executive Travel showroom.

Smoke and coloured flares filled the road, obscuring the view for other drivers along the busy route.

Live fireworks were also filmed being pushed through the letterbox of a terraced home in south London over the weekend.

The explosives are seen to burn red inside the home as the hooded figure runs from the property to flee the scene.

While youths in Woolwich also set off fireworks in the streets on the night the nation celebrated Halloween.

The attacks have prompted outrage from the community.

Concerned residents, worried that someone would get hurt, raised the alarm with the police when they heard huge bangs as the thugs had set off the pyrotechnics near apartment blocks in Masshouse Lane and Smallbrook Queensway around 9pm.

A resident at Allegro Living said: 'I could see fireworks were being thrown at traffic and where passers by were walking and was really concerned someone would get hurt.

'I was considering phoning for an ambulance too as I was so sure someone would be seriously injured.

'I phoned the police twice because they hadn't come after half an hour, and the responder said they were dealing with a number of similar incidents in the area.'

Jane Birkett said: 'Fireworks should be banned. It's disgraceful on what is happening around Birmingham.'

The yobs also terrorised locals in Masshouse apartments, where a resident witnessed them throwing the fireworks at each other.

Earlier in the week a  gang of yobs was filmed hurling fireworks into properties and gardens in Southsea, Hampshire as terrified homeowners were trapped inside.

The hooded yobs put lives at risk as they set off dozens of fireworks, but police called to the scene retreated due to 'safety concerns' for their own officers.

Last week footage also captured further explosives bouncing off a high-rise building and making a loud bang in Pooles Park, Finsbury Park.

Thugs fired a terrifying fusillade of fireworks at apartment blocks as the Islington residents cowered in fear.

The Metropolitan Police responded to the clip, confirming local officers were informed.

On its website, the force states: 'Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause damage to property and do significant harm to people and animals.

'Not only is there a danger from fireworks exploding, they can also pose a serious fire risk as well.

'This is why members of the public may only use fireworks on private property, such as their back gardens, and only licensed professionals can use them in public places.'
