Breathtaking moment a pod of leaping dolphins circle kayakers in a Scottish loch

  • Denise Vernon and her partner Mark were paddling on Loch Hourn, Scotland
  • As they travelled across the sheltered water, a pod of dolphins started leaping
  • The marine mammals surrounded the pair as they filmed the amazing moment
  • Ms Vernon said the first they knew about the dolphins was a 'splashing sound'

Two kayakers were shocked when a pod of dolphins started circling around them in a Scottish loch.

Denise Vernon and her partner Mark paddled out into the waters before they suddenly saw some splashing in the distance.

The dolphins then swam straight towards them on Loch Hourn on the west coast of Scotland.

The couple filmed the moment on a GoPro on Sunday.

Ms Vernon added: 'We first saw big splashes and didn't know what it was.

'I then shouted to my partner who was near the other shore that I think it's dolphins.

'They then changed direction and swam while leaping up clear of water into the air straight towards us.'

She and her partner, 54, stopped to enjoy the moment and she added: 'They then swam past us in the other direction and I thought they were close and was very happy.

'But then they again changed direction and leaped out very close beside my sea kayak.

'For a moment they swam with me and I could see a couple of them under water right beside me so close that I was momentarily afraid to paddle as not to hit them.

'They then overtook us and leaped up in front of us once more, circled us and swam back to the far shore, where they were presumably herding fish in the bay.

'I am still totally in awe of the rareness of the experience.'

The water was completely still before the dolphins started playing near the kayaks
