Beauty knows no pain! Vintage photos reveal the extreme lengths women went to for their appearance - including wearing a face harness designed to 'fix' an upturned nose

  • Vintage pictures show the reality of beauty treatments in the 1930s, 40s and 50s
  • One picture shows a woman going through painful freckle removal treatment
  • In another, ladies can be seen sporting swimsuits made of wood to the beach

The saying 'one must suffer to be beautiful' is certainly appropriate for this set of eye-opening vintage photographs.

The series of images reveal the extreme beauty treatments and bizarre wardrobe choices women opted for to look fashionable in the first half of the 20th century.

In a gallery compiled by Bored Panda, British and American women are pictured undergoing baffling therapies and donning bizarre contraptions in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

In one snap, a woman is seen having a scary-looking freckle removal session, while a lady offers a cheeky smile as another paints a pantyhose line onto her calf in another. Women did this when money was scarce or when tights ran out during and post-WWII.

Here FEMAIL reveals more of the bizarre beauty trends women endured back in the day.
