Gavellas, 22, was refused bail by the Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday and the matter was adjourned until September 8, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Pietrobon was arrested at Parramatta Police Station on May 27 following a gruelling police investigation spanning more than 18 months.
He was charged with the murder of Ms Cartwright before declining to appear before a magistrate by video link.
The case was adjourned for eight weeks so police could prepare the brief of evidence and Pietrobon was formally refused bail.
He was due to appear before the courts again in July.
It's being alleged Pietrobon killed Ms Cartwright on October 1, 2018, her 32nd birthday, and kept her body for up to two days before dumping it.

NSW Police homicide squad commander Danny Doherty said Pietrobon had been at the police station in relation to a separate matter when he was arrested.
'Police will allege that Nicole and this 51-year-old man had met through dating sites that Nicole was known to be using,' Det Supt Doherty said.
'There's (allegedly) links between this man and Nicole, and to the crime scene.
The matter is still before the courts.
