Knifeman on the run after stabbing a woman in a packed shopping centre carpark as consumers watched in horror

• He fled and the woman was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition 

A man is on the run after stabbing a 26-year-old woman in a packed shopping centre carpark. 

Police said the woman was stabbed outside Waratah Village Shopping Centre in Newcastle at about 2pm Sunday.  

Emergency services were called to the Wallace Street shopping centre, where they found the victim with a stab wound to her forearm. 

The man fled the scene and the woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A witness said he saw three people running through the car park and then heard a woman screaming that the man had stabbed her, the Daily Telegraph reports. 

Police have set up 'multiple crime scenes' at the shopping centre as the manhunt begins.

Several police vehicles remain in the car park and investigators have established a crime scene. 

Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the stabbing to contact Crime Stoppers.
