Google will start start reopening offices at 10% capacity in July and scale up to 30% by September, as CEO says 'the office will look and feel different than when you left it'

  • Employees that need to be back in the office will return on a rotating basis
  • Those who need to come in will be notified by June 10
  • For the rest of employees, returning to the office will be optional
  • Google said on Tuesday it would give each employee an allowance of $1,000 to expense office equipment for working from home

Google has announced it will being to reopen buildings in some cities at roughly 10 percent capacity starting in July and ramp it up to 30 percent by September. 
The tech firm announced the opening plans on Tuesday offering new guidelines to return to normalcy, if conditions permit. 
Google and its peer Facebook Inc have allowed employees to work from home since early March in light of the coronavirus pandemic.    
There are a limited number of employees whose roles are needed back in the office this year and they would return on a limited, rotating basis, Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said in a blog post.

Those who need to come in will be notified by June 10. For the rest of employees, returning to work will be optional.
'Moving ahead, we are looking to develop more overall flexibility in how we work,' Pichai wrote. 
'Our campuses are designed to enable collaboration and community...at the same time, we are very familiar with distributed work as we have many offices around the world and open-minded about the lessons we’ll learn through this period,' he added

Google said on Tuesday it would give each employee an allowance of $1,000, or the equivalent value in their country, to expense necessary equipment and office furniture, as it expects most of them to largely work from home for the remainder of the year.  
Other tech giants such as Twitter and Square have extended remote working options for employees indefinitely .
