From Christmas markets in Vienna to floating markets in Vietnam: National Geographic reveals the ultimate places to visit for a winter getaway.

  • National Geographic Traveler has revealed their top nine places to visit for the ultimate winter getaway 
  • Among the destinations to make the list are the Christmas markets of Vienna and the tundra of the Antarctic
  • Sunnier climes include the floating markets of Vietnam, the island of Belize and the beaches of the Caribbean 

  • For some people a winter getaway means grabbing their passport and heading off to sunnier climes to escape the cold temperatures.
    But for others its about finding the perfect winter wonderland complete with snow and festive cheer.
    So National Geographic Traveller have come up with a list of the top nine places to jet off to for the perfect winter holiday.
    Destinations rated highly include Vienna thanks to its famous Christmas markets, Patagonia, which is surrounded by ice and even Antarctica with its cute gentoo penguins. 
    While hotter climates making the list include Vietnam, where tourists can explore the Mekong River, winter sun hot spot the Caribbean and the diver's paradise Belize.
    So, with passports at the ready, these are the places you'll need on your radar if your planning a holiday.


    Vienna: The Austrian city's classic Christkindlmarkt is the perfect place to drink gluhwein and go ice skating. National Geographic say that once into the New Year, try out the coffeehouses, schnitzel and visit the Vienna Opera Ball


    Vietnam and Cambodia: The Mekong river connects China to Vietnam and National Geographic say the Cai Be floating market is a must see. While in Cambodia they recommend a visit to the rice fields and a Buddhist monastery

    Japan: The land of the rising sun in winter is a dream, say National Geographic and glowing houses end up  overed in snow in Chubu, Japan. This is just one of many festivals that bring Japan to life this time of year

    Tanzania: The African country makes the list thanks to its warm climate, diverse geography, Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti. Pictured are hot air balloons rising up above the savannah of the Serengeti National Park


    Patagonia: National Geographic say the mountainous, milky blue views make the long winter flight to Patagonia worth it. Pictured is the Torres del Paine National Park, which is only open in the winter months 

    Caribbean: The region might have been battered by hurricanes Irma and Maria but the Caribbean is always a winter favourite thanks to all year round sun. Pictured are colourful beach houses on the shore of the Turks and Caicos 

    Belize: The island of Belize makes the list thanks to its lush landscape and being described as a diver's paradise. Pictured are the jungles located near Belcampo Lodge

    California: Baja is perfect for a winter getaway according to National Geographic as thousands of grey whales migrate some 6,000 miles south to breeding grounds such as those pictured 
    Antarctica: Gentoo penguins peer off an iceberg in South Georgia Island in Antarctica. National Geographic says a winter cruise to the island means you can see the birds in their natural habitat
